Ear Surgery Houston
The size and shape of the ears vary greatly from person to person. Some people are completely happy with the way their ears look. Others may feel like their ears are too big for their head or protrude too much, making them look odd. While the appearance of the ears may not be something that everybody thinks about, those who are unhappy with their ears can feel very self-conscious about their appearance.
Ear issues can also include damaged ears. Some people may have torn or stretched earlobes as a result of wearing earrings or plugs. These issues can also be very noticeable and can draw unwanted attention to your ears. It can also prevent people who enjoy wearing earrings from wearing their favorite accessories.
Another common issue is ear deformities that occur at birth. During development, one or both ears may form improperly. Deformed ears can often be a source of ridicule for young children, which can have a negative impact during their developmental years.
Ear Surgery Houston
If you are bothered by the appearance of your ears or you would like to correct an issue with your ears, surgery is your best option. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Donna Rich can address your ear concerns by performing otoplasty on one or both ears.
Otoplasty, often called an ear pinning, is a cosmetic surgery procedure performed at Dr. Donna Rich’s Houston plastic surgery office. The purpose of the procedure is to reshape the ears or to reposition protuberant ears, ie, ears that “stick out” too much from the head. Although an otoplasty is often performed to set prominent ears closer to the head, an otoplasty can also reduce the size of large ears, and correct ear deformities such as “lop ear,” “cupped ear” and “shell ear.” An otoplasty is also an effective procedure for large or stretched earlobes, and lobes with creases and wrinkles due to aging.
Good Candidates For An Otoplasty Procedure
Houston men and women who are otherwise in good health but have concerns about the appearance of their ears are good candidates for an otoplasty. During your private consultation with Dr. Rich, she will discuss your reasons for pursuing an otoplasty, ask you about the kind of results you want to accomplish through surgery, review all your options and discuss the anesthesia, potential risks, and your expected recovery.
Dr. Rich’s plastic surgery office is located in Webster, TX, convenient to Houston, Galveston, Clear Lake, and Pearland. During your otoplasty consultation, a thorough history will be taken and a face and ear exam will be performed to confirm that ear surgery is the correct surgical procedure for you. The reason for being so thorough during the consultation is to ensure that our patients are fully satisfied with the care and results they are provided with.
How An Otoplasty Procedure Is Performed
Depending upon your needs, your otoplasty procedure may be performed with local anesthesia (with or without sedation) or under general anesthesia. Simple procedures such as earlobe rejuvenation or repair of a torn earlobe can be performed in a treatment room. More extensive otoplasty procedures to correct ear deformities or protuberance will be undertaken in Dr. Rich’s office-based accredited operating suite.
The approach to the procedure will vary depending on the issue that is being addressed. The incisions used for the procedure will either be made along the creases in the back of the ear or within the inner creases of the ear. This is to ensure that the results provided look as natural as possible.
The procedure may involve the removal of excess cartilage, excess skin, and other types of tissue. The remaining cartilage and skin will then be reshaped and the incision will be closed using internal stitches. Stitches may also be used on the outside of the ear to ensure the incision heals properly.
On average, the procedure takes about two hours to complete, though this will vary depending on the amount of work required to attain the patient’s ideal results.
What To Expect After An Otoplasty Procedure
After an otoplasty procedure, you’ll be most comfortable if you keep your head elevated, even while sleeping, for a few days. This will help to avoid any discomfort resulting from touching or pressing against the ear and will also help to diminish swelling. This should also be done while you are sleeping in order to keep you from rolling onto your ears while they are still a bit tender.
Applying ice will provide comfort, as will Tylenol. You will have some bruising and swelling for a few days, but these issues will slowly subside over the course of your recovery. The area will be covered and small Steri-strips will be placed over your incisions.
At your first post-operative office visit, your sutures will be removed. After several weeks, exercise can be resumed, including bending and lifting, though you should be sure not to overexert yourself. Once your dressings are removed, you will see immediate improvement in the appearance of your ears. Over time, and you’ll start to see your final, beautiful results!
Dr. Rich will provide you with a full list of preoperative and post-operative instructions to ensure that you are properly prepared for your procedure and your recovery.
