One of the most popular plastic surgery “procedures” today is the Mommy Makeover — a selection of different procedures performed together to correct the changes pregnancy leaves on new mothers.

There are a variety of issues caused by pregnancy that don’t end when the baby is born. On average, most women gain 25-35 pounds during pregnancy, stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks, hips, lower back, buttocks and thighs. The breasts also grow in preparation for breast feeding.

While moms may lose the weight eventually, it is not always lost proportionally. More weight may be lost in the breasts or buttocks than the abdomen and waist.

In addition to weight gain, the abdomen grows during pregnancy to make room for the baby. This can cause weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles and stretching of the abdominal skin. This may appear as bulging of the belly and make mom look as if she’s still pregnant. Also, once a woman finishes breastfeeding, the breasts often deflate and begin to sag.

What can be done? In many cases, a Mommy Makeover is in order. This selection of procedures is designed, case by case, to counteract the physical effects of childbearing.

In general, a Mommy Makeover may include:

  • Breast augmentation
  • Breast Lift
  • Tummy Tuck
  • Buttocks Lift
  • Liposuction

Some women may need breast augmentation to correct severely deflated “pancake” breasts while others need implants in combination with a breast lift. Some may even need a breast reduction. Most will need a full tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) to correct muscle laxity. This procedure tightens the muscles in addition to removing any excess skin and fat. Some women may also benefit from liposuction to sculpt the back, hips and thighs, smoothing out those contours. Many women have also been requesting a buttocks lift like the Brazilian Butt Lift in order to regain a more shapely appearance. This surgery involves removing fat from other areas of the body and using it to augment the shape and size of the buttocks.

So, who should have a Mommy Makeover?

Start by asking yourself some important questions:

  • Am I done having children?
  • Am I at a stable weight?
  • Am I finished breastfeeding?
